EmploymentAdjusters, appraisers, examiners, and investigators held about 241,000 jobs in 2002. Of these, more than 14,000 were jobs held by auto damage insurance appraisers. Insurance carriers employed nearly 60 percent of claims adjusters, appraisers, examiners, and investigators; more than 20 percent were employed by insurance agencies and brokerages, and private claims adjusting companies. Around 2 percent of adjusters, appraisers, examiners, and investigators were self-employed.
